What are warning signs that your wiper blades need to be changed? Wiper blades that skip, streak, chatter, split or otherwise fail to clear the debris from your windshield need to be changed. Check the condition of the rubber components of each wiper blade, including the rear blade if applicable. Wiper blades with split rubber and/or rounded edges that should otherwise be squared should also be changed.
It is normal for wiper blades to deteriorate over time, but what causes it?
Wiper blade deterioration is primarily caused by environmental factors. Freezing temperatures will cause the rubber to split and crack while exposure to ultraviolet light and warm temperatures can have the same effect. Acid rain and salt water found in moist air in seaside locations are also linked to wiper blade deterioration.
You can extend the life of your wiper blades by following some simple tips:
– Never use your wiper blades to de-ice your windshield, use defroster or ice scraper instead.
– Clean your windshield every time you fill your tank with gas. A rubber squeegee is provided at most gas stations.
– Clean your wiper blades with a damp paper towel to remove any loose dirt or oil.
We recommend that our customers that live in areas with harsh winter climates install winter blades on their vehicles. These have an enclosed holder that prevents ice and snow from building up.
