When severe weather hits, being stuck in your car for long periods of time can not only be an inconvenience, it can be downright dangerous. Recent winter storms in many states have caught drivers off guard, turning their normal commute home into an unforgettable nightmare. Highways became parking lots with many drivers complaining about taking 2 hours or more just to move a few feet. Some even had to spend the night in their vehicle at below freezing temperatures.
At some point in time, if you drive, you will be caught in a traffic accident backup, or a construction delay, a weather related delay, or maybe even a mechanical breakdown. But, even if you are caught in one of these unfortunate situations, there are a few essential items to keep in your car (at all times) that will not only lessen the inconvenience, but could save your life or the life of another.
- First-Aid Kit – This goes without saying. Every vehicle needs a first-aid kit.
- Owner’s Manual – Best to keep this in the vehicle where it belongs. You never know when you might need to reference it.
- Jumper Cables – Yes, car batteries die when you least expect it. Plus you will look like a hero if you have to jump start your boss’s car.
- Cell Phone Charger – It can be a real drag if your latest high tech smart phone losses it’s charge. Spend a couple bucks and buy a car cable/adapter to charge it. And, if you change phone brands, make sure you get the cable that fits your brand. Most are not interchangeable.
- Blanket – Even a larger heavy towel will work. Anything to keep you warm if you have to spend the night in a car.
- Swiss Army Knife or Leatherman – They don’t call them multi-tools for nothing; these handy little gadgets can fit in the glove compartment and are invaluable when needed.
- Tire Pressure Gauge – Keep this in the glove compartment too, and check your tire pressures at least once a month.
- Water and Snack Bars – There is nothing worse than being stuck in traffic and not moving for hours…..wait….yes, there is. Being hungry and thirsty while stuck in traffic for hours.
- Updated Registration and Insurance Card – In case you get pulled over, it’s nice to have these ready for the officer. It can make things go a lot smoother.
These are just some of the items to keep in your vehicle. You might even want to add a few other items of your personal choice to lessen the inconvenience …such as paper towels, gloves, etc. Those drivers that are traveling with infants or young children should also remember to pack a small box with extra diapers, formula, baby wipes, a card game or two, and extra snacks and water.
