Three Out of Four Cars Need Service

If you own a vehicle, chances are it needs some work, according to the Car Care Council, and May is the ideal time to give your car some extra attention.

The results of vehicle inspections held at community car care events across the country last year reveal that 77% of vehicles on the road need service or parts. An analysis of the inspections found that the top three problem areas with the highest failure rates were: engine oil (22%), engine cooling systems (20%), and brake systems (18%).

Eight percent of the vehicles inspected had the “check engine” light on and new air filters were needed in 19% of the vehicles. At least one belt was reported as unsatisfactory in 14% of the vehicles inspected, and 10% required at least one new hose. Battery cables, clamps and terminals needed maintenance in 11% of the vehicles, and 10% of the batteries failed a load test.

When checking lubricants and fluids, the top three failure rates were: low or dirty motor oil at 22%, low, leaking or dirty coolant at 20%, and inadequate brake fluid levels at 18%. Power steering, engine coolant, and transmission fluids were also checked and had failure rates of 14%.

Inspecting for lighting showed that 13% of the vehicles needed either a headlight, brake light or license plate light. Windshield wipers were needed on 14% of the vehicles. Improperly inflated tires were found on 9% of the vehicles.
